How is the day organised?
|| Learner Development Period
End of day
Is my child allowed off school premises during the day?
No - unless you have given written permission and will be taking your child to a medical appointment, for example. Some school activities may involve learners being taken out of school by staff, but when this happens they will be closely supervised.
What aspects of Religious Education will my child receive?
Following government requirements, learners will receive a generally Christian religious education through Religious Education lessons. Assemblies are also Christian and often include contributions from the local clergy. If you do not wish your child to receive this education, please let us know.
Does the school have a sex education policy?
Yes. Copies of this and all other policies are available from the school office.
What kit is needed for PE?
Please see uniform section for details.
What happens if my child cannot do PE?
We consider this an important part of the curriculum and expect all learners to participate, but occasionally it may be difficult for learners to take part due to serious injuries etc. If this is the case, please write a note and if the medical condition continues over two or more weeks, please send a doctor’s certificate.
If a learner is unwell, or suffering from a minor injury we expect them to be equipped with their PE kit to assist their peers by taking on the role of an official, coach and or capture video evidence in accordance with the attainment criteria required for end of KS3 and KS4.
What happens to jewellery and valuables during lessons?
PE Staff cannot accept responsibility for the safe-keeping of anything other than watches and small sums of money.
What happens if my child has forgotten his/her kit?
Kit will be provided by the PE department.
What sports clubs/teams exist?
The PE staff run a wide variety of sporting activities ranging from aerobics to rugby. Contact the PE Staff for details. We also run a Conwy School Sport initiative.
What musical activities take place?
The school has a strong musical tradition and a flourishing music department. There are choirs, instrumental groups and concerts which are regularly organised within the school and the community.
Can my child take instrumental lessons in school?
Yes. All learners are given the opportunity to have music lessons through IMPACT! All lessons take place on Monday to Thursday from 3.15 - 4.45pm. We offer Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Harp, Voice, Guitar, Keyboard and Piano lessons. At present, there is a charge of £75 per year. We guarantee 10 lessons per term and payment is expected in advance.
What meals are available?
We are very proud of our restaurant which offers a very wide range of nutritious meals to suit all tastes – hot meals, salads and sandwiches. The restaurant is also open for breakfast before the start of school and for snacks at morning break. Full menu details are avaible here.
How do I pay for my child’s meals?
You can either pay on a daily or weekly basis.
What happens if my child loses his/her dinner money?
We will always try to ensure that your child has a meal and ask you to send the money for this into school the next day.
Does the school have a Healthy Eating Policy?
Yes. Meals served in the restaurant follow the Appetite for Life guidelines issued by the Welsh Government (see Appetite for Life).
What is the school’s policy on water?
We believe it is important for learners to drink plenty of water and there are cold water dispensers around the school which can be used to fill water bottles. Learners are allowed to drink plain water in class. We do not, however, allow energy drinks in school.
Is my child entitled to free meals?
If you are on Income Support, or other benefits, a claim form is available from the school office.
Can my child bring a packed lunch to school?
Yes. We ask that your child eats this in the restaurant. Food is not to be eaten on the school corridors.
Can my child leave the school premises?
Learners are not allowed to leave the school grounds during lunch or break time.
Please make sure all property is clearly marked with your child’s name. Unfortunately we cannot be held responsible for articles lost on the school premises.
Can bikes be brought into school?
Yes. Learners will be given a safe place to leave bikes. We recommend they padlock them to the wall bars to be safe. Again, they are brought to school at the owner’s risk. A limited number of bike lockers are available.
Will my child’s jewellery and other valuables be insured by the school?
No. Unfortunately, we cannot insure personal property and discourage jewellery in school both for this reason and on safety grounds.
How can my child get home if he or she misses the bus?
Unfortunately, he/she will have to pay to travel on a later bus or telephone for a parent to collect them.
During your child’s time at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan there will be occasions when photographs are taken of various activities and events. These photographs are used for displays, presentations, school publications and during events such as awards evenings where success is celebrated. If you do not want your child’s photograph to be taken or used, please contact the Headteacher in writing.
