UKMT Maths Challenge

Year 10 and 11 learners at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan have taken part in the Intermediate UKMT Maths Challenge which has been running since 1996.

Its aim is advancing the education of children and young people in mathematics.  Over 650,000 pupils from 4,500 schools took part in the three individual challenges last year in the UK's biggest national maths competitions.

Each challenge leads into a follow-on Olympiad round. The successful learners have the chance to join mentoring schemes and summer schools for high performing students as well as training the team of six to represent the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The papers contain multiple choice questions with Gold, silver and bronze certificates awarded to 40% of participants nationally in Intermediate Challenges.

The most successful participants at each level are invited to enter follow-on rounds; Kangaroos (multiple choice questions) or Olympiads requiring full written answers which takes place in March. There is also a best in school certificate awarded to the top scoring learner in each school.

Mrs Janet Ralph Key Stage 4 Coordinator for Maths, who organised the competition, said, “This is an excellent opportunity for more able maths’ learners. It stretches them in terms of their ability and the experience shows they are willing to extend their learning.”

Jodie Jacklin, one of the learners from Year 11, entered the competition last year. She said, “It was a challenging paper this year but I tried my best and hope this time I receive a certificate.”
