Twentieth year for summer school

This year has seen Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan Summer School celebrate its twentieth year with its latest intake of learners.

Miss Sarah Vaughan Edmunds and her team of staff welcomed learners from a number of schools such as Ysgol y Faenol, Ysgol y Castell  Ysgol Maes Owen, Ysgol Christchurch, Ysgol Llywelyn as well as their neighbouring school Ysgol St Elfod.

Over fifty learners enjoyed a timetable which included literacy and numeracy skills, design technology practical exercises such as building a rocket, a masterchef activity, archery, orienteering, pottery as well a free trip to Porth Eirias where they took part in multi hull sailing, raft building and board surfing. They also learnt how to play the ukulele and took part in a Bollywood themed dance. The aim was to build their confidence and independence, work as a team and develop problem solving skills. The week culminated in a performance and an afternoon tea for the parents prepared by the learners which was a great success.

Miss Vaughan Edmunds, Transition Coordinator, said: “This year has been another great success at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan’s Summer School. Many of the learners had already benefitted from attending the free and varied after school clubs at the school from Year 4 onwards. They also gained valuable time with new classmates, familiarised themselves with the school and got to know key staff.”

Mr Cummins, Headteacher, added that: “It has been a pleasure to welcome the learners.  They will be ready for learning when they arrive and are each able to take their place in our special school community.”
