In the run up to Remembrance Day Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan unveiled their new memorial to those from the school who lost their lives during the two world wars.

The memorial was unveiled by John Geraghty, Branch Secretary of the Royal British Legion, Abergele.

The memorial, which is partly based on the Cenotaph in London, was the idea of Print Technician Craig Pierce.

“I wanted the school to have a fitting memorial that would remind pupils and staff of the price paid by many for our freedom” he said.

The striking memorial encompasses poppies, the emblem of remembrance since they bloomed in the killing fields of the First World War, and the names of those from the school who lost their lives in each world war.

The display was constructed by the school’s Technology Technician Craig Chisholm, and has been designed to be mobile so that it can be used every year in the lead up to Armistice Day.

“This is a suitable tribute to remember those from the school who were killed but also all of those who have died in every conflict since” said Curriculum Leader of History, Ray Wood.

The school also held a two minutes’ silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, to remember Armistice Day and the end of WWI.
